Historic Churches and Monuments Around Göreme

Historic Churches and Monuments Around Göreme

Beyond the famous churches within the Göreme Open-Air Museum, the surrounding area is home to numerous rock-cut churches, monasteries, chapels, and historic monuments that reflect Cappadocia's extraordinary Christian heritage.

Among the most significant are Saklı Church (Hidden Church), Aynalı Church (Mirror Church), Durmuş Kadir Church, Yusuf Koç Church, Bezirhane Church, Saint Hieron Chapel, Mesevli Church (Church of Saint Sergius), and the remarkable churches hidden throughout Zemi Valley.

Saklı Church (Hidden Church)

Saklı Church is located near El Nazar Church and takes its name from its secluded position, partially hidden among the rock formations of Zemi Valley.

The church features:

  • A rectangular floor plan
  • Three apses
  • An entrance facing Zemi Valley

Its most remarkable feature is the collection of frescoes painted directly onto the volcanic rock without a plaster layer, a rare technique in Cappadocia.

Among the surviving scenes are:

  • The Annunciation
  • The Nativity of Christ
  • The Presentation of Jesus at the Temple
  • The Baptism of Christ
  • The Dormition of the Virgin Mary
  • The Crucifixion
  • Various Christian saints

Today, the church is generally closed to the public and can usually be visited only with permission from the caretaker of El Nazar Church.

Aynalı Church (Mirror Church)

Located on the road between Göreme and Ortahisar, Aynalı Church stands within an old vineyard.

The monastic complex includes:

  • Monks' living quarters
  • A refectory
  • Kitchen
  • Storage rooms
  • Connecting passageways and tunnels

The church itself is supported by four columns and has a single apse.

Unlike many churches in Cappadocia, it contains no figurative frescoes. Instead, its walls are decorated with simple red geometric motifs.

One section of the complex served as a meeting hall known as Fırkatan, which is why some sources also refer to the monument as Fırkatan Church.

One particularly distinctive feature is an unusual cross formed by four interlocking "E"-shaped symbols, a rare decorative motif in Cappadocian religious art.

Historic Monuments in the Center of Göreme

The area surrounding the modern town center of Göreme preserves several fascinating historical monuments that reveal another side of the region's rich heritage beyond its famous monasteries.

Roman Tomb

Perched on a prominent rock formation in the center of Göreme, this monumental Roman tomb dates back to the Roman period.

Originally decorated with impressive columns and architectural elements, part of the structure has weathered over the centuries, yet it remains one of Göreme's most recognizable landmarks.

Today, the monument is beautifully illuminated at night and can be seen from many points throughout the town.

Durmuş Kadir Church

Located at the entrance to Avcılar Valley, this remarkable church features:

  • A basilica-style floor plan
  • Three apses
  • Six columns
  • An entrance chapel

Built between the 6th and 7th centuries, it is considered one of the finest examples of Early Christian architecture in Cappadocia.

Although no frescoes have survived, its impressive architectural design makes it an important historical monument.

Yusuf Koç Church

Situated near Durmuş Kadir Church, Yusuf Koç Church served as a pigeon house for many years.

The church contains:

  • Two apses
  • Six columns
  • Frescoes dating from the 11th century

Its beautifully painted saints remain among the church's most remarkable artistic features.

Bezirhane Church

The name Bezirhane means "Linseed Oil House."

For centuries, the church was used for producing and storing linseed oil, causing smoke to darken much of its interior.

The building is notable for:

  • Its enormous size
  • Six massive columns
  • Roman-inspired architectural design

Although its frescoes have disappeared, Bezirhane remains one of the largest and most impressive churches in the Göreme area.

Saint Hieron Chapel

This small chapel is dedicated to Saint Hieron, one of Cappadocia's local warrior saints.

Located on the road between Göreme and Uçhisar, it features:

  • A rectangular floor plan
  • A single apse
  • A funerary chamber
  • Crosses carved directly into the rock

Although no wall paintings remain, the quality of its stone carving is exceptional.

Mesevli Church (Church of Saint Sergius)

Located within a residential area of Göreme, Mesevli Church was carved entirely into the volcanic rock.

Its main features include:

  • A single nave
  • A semicircular apse
  • Burial chambers
  • Large crosses carved into both the ceiling and the apse

The surviving traces of frescoes indicate that the church was once richly decorated with religious paintings.

Zemi Valley

Zemi Valley is one of Cappadocia's most popular hiking destinations.

Stretching approximately 5.6 kilometers (3.5 miles), the valley connects Göreme with Ortahisar, offering spectacular scenery filled with volcanic rock formations, natural tunnels, hidden churches, and lush vegetation.

Along the hiking route, visitors can explore:

  • Karabulut Church
  • Sarnıç Church
  • El Nazar Church
  • Saklı Church
  • Fairy Chimneys
  • Görkündere Valley

The trail is relatively easy and suitable for most visitors.

Karabulut Church (Black Cloud Church)

Located within Zemi Valley, Karabulut Church dates from the 11th century and remains far from the usual tourist routes.

Reaching the church requires hiking along little-used trails, making it advisable to visit with a local guide.

Sarnıç Church (The Cistern Church)

Situated near Karabulut Church, Sarnıç Church was used as a water reservoir for part of its history.

Evidence of this later function can still be seen today.

Its surviving frescoes include scenes depicting:

  • The Annunciation
  • The Nativity of Christ
  • The Betrayal of Judas
  • The Crucifixion
  • Christian saints portrayed inside decorative medallions

The church was built during the 11th century.

Bağlıdere Valley (Love Valley)

Bağlıdere Valley, internationally known as Love Valley, is one of Göreme's most famous natural attractions.

Its spectacular 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) hiking trail winds through extraordinary Fairy Chimneys and some of Cappadocia's most iconic geological formations.

Love Valley is one of the region's best locations for:

  • Hiking
  • Photography
  • Sunrise viewing
  • Sunset walks

Its breathtaking scenery makes Love Valley an essential destination for visitors wishing to experience the natural beauty and unique landscapes that have made Cappadocia famous around the world.
