The name Jorge comes from the Greek and means: "farmer, who works on the land". Despite the popularity of San Jorge, very little is known about him, and almost all his news is based on legends and traditions that have passed from mouth to mouth over the centuries. All historians and writers of books of saints, usually agree that it was a Roman soldier, born in the third century in Cappadocia and who died at the beginning of the IV, probably in the city of Lydda, the current Lod of Israel. His parents, according to tradition, were farmers and had a lot of money. In other versions of the story of St. George, we are told that his father was a military man and that his son wanted to follow in his footsteps. In most of the churches of Cappadocia we will see their images.
Our tour will start with a visit to the Göreme open-air museum, located in the Göreme valley, an incredible Byzantine monastic complex made up of churches carved into the rock with beautiful frescoes, among them; the San Basilio chapel of Ancira, the church of the apples (Elmali Kilise), the church of Santa Bárbara, the Church of Serpiente, the church of Santa Catarina (in all these places it is possible to find images of San Jorge). Arrival at the hotel. Dinner and accommodation.

Continuation with Avanos village of potters, the underground city of Ozkonak, built with storage of cereals, bedrooms and ventilation shafts. This place was used as a refuge for the Christians of the time. In this region you can also find the frescoes of San Jorge. We will continue to visit the church of San Teodoro, where a new image of San Jorge awaits us. Gulsehir is also a region where there are several images of St. George, for example the Church of St. John the Baptist in which the frescoes date from the VDCA century. In this church the image that pays more attention will be the icon of Saint George when he kills the dragon. The texts of this icon have a spiritual meaning. The church of San Jorge in Isla Grande is considered a place of pilgrimage of the faithful in which several devotees of the saint
They make their way to the top of the hill (where the church is) with their feet barefoot for their demonstration of faith. Those who can do this path of bare feet are considered as "half-pilgrims", and many believe that only a prayer visit to the Church of St. George will be sufficient to fulfill their wishes, such as marriage, children, health, wealth, etc ...
